Florida High’s thespian troupe took up the challenge of competing in their annual district competition. From powerful monologues to breathtaking musical numbers, performing arts students commanded the stage and earned top honors at the competition.
Each year, high school actors, directors and designers convene for the two-day Thespian Districts, showcasing talents and competing for a chance to go to state.
“[Day one] was the one-act competitions, and [day two] was the solo and group competitions,” freshman Hannah Ross said.
Our thespian troupe triumphed, winning various awards for their spectacular performances.
“I felt like we did really well, and I’m proud of our performance as a troupe,” junior Carson Broome said. “We got a lot of superiors and two perfect scores. We also got chosen to bring the one-act I directed to the state competition.”
Reaching this level is no small feat. Many thespians had to devote a lot of time and energy both in and out of school to prepare themselves, giving them a stronger chance to create an unforgettable performance.
“Personally, I did a lot of rehearsals with my student-directed actors to get good practice,” senior Katie Russell said. “I [made sure] I did enough research on the play I was a part of, analyzing the characters and the scenes.”
Many thespians recommend others to participate as well and take a chance at performing for districts.
“It’s extremely fun and [fulfilling]. It’s such an [exciting] trip with a lot of great people. I really got to bond with others,” Broome said. “If you’re interested in performing, you should join. I believe it’s a great opportunity.”
