As the third quarter ends and the fourth quarter begins, students are turning their attention towards course request forms and new classes. Including AP Business, Public Speaking, Emergency Response 2 and Forensics 2, all of which provide students with more opportunities.
One of the most notable additions would be AP Business, a strong entrance course for students interested in pursuing the field of business and finance. For students considering dual enrollment in Introduction to Business (GEB1011), AP Business could be another option.
“The AP Business class is part of understanding basic accounting of your business costs and income. It’s also understanding when to trade, or get resources from other businesses, as well as all the different legal protections and restrictions surrounding business, so that consumers and business owners are protected,” Economics teacher Cierra Young said.
With the addition of new courses every year, picking what courses you want to take and what you want to do becomes even more complex. When filling out the course request form, students need to focus on ensuring they get a schedule they like. Oftentimes, students select the classes that their friends are in rather than courses that look interesting to them, which may have drawbacks.
According to Dean of Academics Todd McNeil, another big mistake is “not putting enough alternate choices…We have so many classes that are only offered once or twice during the day. It creates conflicts, so it is not as easy to give everybody what they first requested. The more alternates they put, the easier it is to make them get the schedule they want, rather than having to place them in something they did not put on their course request form at all, so it fits their schedule. The more alternates the better.”
With all the new classes, students hope that they find courses that will benefit their future. These forms seem to be more than pieces of paper in the eyes of students and faculty alike; these forms are determinants of their futures.
