As students return to class and the Friday night lights flicker back on, Florida High’s football team wastes no time making a statement. On Thursday, Aug. 14, the Seminoles opened their season with a hard-fought victory over the Godby Cougars, setting the tone for upcoming games.
The scoreboard told one story, but the real work began long before kickoff. Throughout the summer, the team spent hours improving their strength, endurance, watching film and more.
“I’ve seen a lot of growth from summer to the game,” varsity football player Jason Harville said, reflecting on the team’s transformation. The growth was evident on the field, where Florida High showed not just talent, but also cohesion and resilience.
Even the opposition took notice. Godby quarterback Landon Dougherty, who made his debut in the game, complimented Florida High’s performance. “I can see Florida High doing very well this season. I think they will be a playoff team,” Dougherty said. Despite being on the losing side, he showed respect both on and off the field, acknowledging the Seminoles’ hard work.
“We are using everyone who is doubting us, saying that we are not as good as previous teams, as motivation. That makes us strive to be better than those past teams,” starting running back Teagan Hackett said. That motivation is driving the team to work harder and prove they belong among the best.

Florida High is starting to turn heads with strong performances and confidence. This year’s team can make a mark in school history. Not only did the team secure a win, but they did it with their backup quarterback. The starting quarterback became injured, and sophomore backup quarterback Jayme Miller knew he had to step up. As the season moves forward, the team is focused on building momentum, aiming for a playoff run.
“It was unexpected at first, but I handled it well. I’ve had my teammates encouraging and believing in me, so I knew I had nothing to worry about,” Miller said.
Miller stepped up when the team needed him, keeping a calm composure in a tough spot. His performance proved to his team and others watching that he is ready for what comes next.
“Based on the Godby game, I feel confident in our team and what we can do, and I feel as though we can have a winning and great season, no matter the situation. I feel as if everyone is ready to step up if needed, so I’m very confident in the team’s future,” Miller said.
With a season-opening win, a good mindset and rising leadership from players like Miller, Hackett, and Harville, Florida High is proving that this year’s team is ready to compete. The Seminoles are not just chasing victories; they are building a legacy fueled by hard work and unity. If the Godby game was any indication, Florida High football is just getting started.
