School spirit is not something you learn, but rather something you feel. From the cheering of the cheerleaders and smiling faces in the crowd to the hallways between classes, spirit is everywhere.
“The Renegade group and I met, and we came up with a few themes for games coming up, also with the idea that we’re going to sell some shirts that go along with these different themes,” Dean of Academics Todd McNeil said. “We use that to try to raise money for the school trips in the future.”
Showing up to games and purchasing shirts contributes to Florida High’s future, shows pride and expresses support for your school. School spirit not only brings everyone together, but it also spreads positivity to everybody.
“On weeks that people have to dress up for things, school is just happier, like Homecoming week for example. Everyone is dressing up, and they have a lot of school spirit,” sophomore Peylin Collier said.
At Florida High, school spirit isn’t just about students cheering at pep rallies or dressing up for themed games; it is a communal effort. Teachers also see school spirit as something that extends beyond the student body, shaping the overall atmosphere of the school.
“It’s important that we show how much we enjoy being here, so students enjoy being here. That comes down to bringing that spirit throughout the day, but then also promoting after-school events and being present at student events,” English teacher Morgan King said. “I think it is part of showing that school spirit is not only valued, but part of a teacher’s responsibility as well.”
Teachers feel it is their responsibility to be inclusive, open up to all students and help them feel welcome. Many teachers see it as their duty to boost school spirit by encouraging students personally, whether that means cheering them on at games, welcoming new faces in the classroom or supporting clubs and activities so every student feels seen.
School spirit is not just about cheering on the sidelines or dressing up for spirit weeks. It is also about the pride people have in their school. Whether you are supporting student athletes, dressing up during Homecoming week or simply telling someone where you go to school with pride, every action makes a difference in your school’s environment. Next time you have a chance to show off your spirit for your school, join in and be a proud part of the Florida High community.
