If a study hall were offered during the school day, would students take it? Many student-athletes believe the addition of a study hall could help them balance their demanding schedules, while others argue it could interfere with valuable practice time.
“A study hall period would fit in well with my wrestling practice and [give me] time for video games,” freshman Jack Costello said.
Students would like a study hall class period, since it would help them finish their work. It would especially help those who participate in sports, because they arrive home late at night.
“I think a study hall class period would be a nice balance, since football takes a lot of my homework time,” freshman Zayne Earl said.
Advocates also point out that a study hall could make it easier for student-athletes to manage academics, sports, part-time jobs, and hobbies. However, not all students agree. Some worry that a study hall would take time away from athletic training.
“I wouldn’t want a study hall period, since it would take time away from me getting better at my sport,” senior Sterling Hollingsworth said.
Opinions are clearly divided. Some students, including myself, would prefer having a study hall to better balance academics and athletics. Others believe it is more important to dedicate that time to improving their skills on the field or court.
