Parents everywhere share a common question: How can I truly help my child succeed in school? Over the years, this desire has fueled the growth of organizations such as the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and the National Association of Parents. Now, a new program called All Pro Dads joins the ranks, creating a unique space for fathers to directly engage with their children’s educational journey.
All Pro Dads is a national organization whose purpose is to help dads become more present and active in the lives of their children.
“It’s built around trying to empower and equip dads to be more involved in their child’s education,” FSUS Executive Director Christopher Smalls said. “Florida has adopted it as a framework for all schools throughout the state. Our particular chapter here started in December.”
The organization also makes it a point to destigmatize the role of fathers when it comes to taking care of their children, allowing for more open and positive perspectives on what it means to be a dad.
“I think it gives dads an opportunity to show sides of being a dad that many may not see on a regular basis. Being a dad is not just about being a provider and protector,” member Brandon Bowden said. “We come together with our children and provide a positive environment. We offer moments of pride for our kids while simultaneously uplifting each other.”
It is also meant to serve as a bridge between dads and their children, helping them bond and strengthen their relationships.
“It offers opportunities for dads to spend extra time with their children in the school setting. It’s helped me strengthen my bond with my son and encouraged me to have intentional conversations that I wouldn’t have otherwise,” Bowden said.
Although the organization is based on improving the connection between fathers and their kids regarding life and education, it also serves as a mentorship for dads, helping them navigate parenthood with the help of the community.
“It allows dads to connect with one another to share support and resources,” elementary P.E. Coach Nicholas Brown said. “Parenting can be difficult, especially navigating the school-age years. It’s nice to know that other dads face similar challenges and can share their experiences.”
All Pro Dads is an enriching community, breaking stereotypes regarding father figures and helping spark stronger bonds between parents and their children.
