While many clubs at Florida High focus on competition or performance, Sewing Club offers students a different kind of outlet centered on creativity, collaboration and craftsmanship. In a room filled with fabric, thread and sewing machines, students learn skills that extend far beyond the final stitch.
Sewing Club provides students with an opportunity to combine technical ability and artistic expression in a supportive environment. The club has steadily grown in membership following a successful summer program and now operates year-round as an open, welcoming space for students from all backgrounds. At the moment, students are “free sewing,” according to club adviser Katherine Jones. In addition to learning how to sew, members are also developing valuable life skills.
“[We’ve] been learning a lot, for example, problem solving,” Jones said.
Beyond skill development, the club has become a place for connection and collaboration. Sewing Club has expanded its reach by welcoming both students and teachers, creating an environment that encourages shared learning and community building.
“Spending time with a really great group of people,” Jones said.
The club’s inclusivity has become one of its defining strengths. By opening its doors to the entire school community, Sewing Club has bridged generational gaps and fostered meaningful relationships across campus.
“It’s not just about the garments, it’s about the good times,” Jones said. “It’s about the conversations that happen while the machines are running and fingers are knitting. They are stitching together an amazing community here at Florida High.”
