In our lives, many influential women shape who we are today. Whether it is a teacher, your own mother or a famous woman who inspires you, all women play a role in our lives, no matter how big or how small the sacrifice is.
Many influential women have had a significant impact on the world we live in today. Important figures include Rosa Parks, who helped ban segregated buses in 1956; Frida Kahlo, who expressed her feelings through art and many others. Today, their determination and courage have changed the world for the better, expanding rights and encouraging the expression of emotions through creativity. Their stories act as a vivid reminder that persevering even when things are difficult can drive change.
“One of my influential women is Susan B. Anthony because she created the women’s suffrage movement, which allowed voting rights for women,” freshman Meisa Hutt said.
Furthermore, women play a major role in guiding us on the right path in life by teaching fundamental skills that help kids thrive in the real world.
“My mom shaped the person I am today by being strict and making sure everything is neat and presentable. It shows how she wants me to put myself forward and become the best version of myself,” freshman Khloe Woodson said. “She wants me to make sure everything that I do is good for me and the people near me.”
Between influences at home and in school, many students and staff recognize that impactful women shape their values in different but equally meaningful ways. While family members often lay the foundation by teaching discipline, responsibility and personal standards, mentors and educators can expand those lessons by opening doors to new opportunities and passions. These relationships highlight how guidance can come from multiple places, each contributing to a person’s growth, confidence and sense of purpose.
“My biggest influential woman figure that created lasting change is my IB Psychology teacher and dance teacher, Dr. Rona Roberts. She influenced my life because she was able to bring back dance into my life without financial stress. Her show, Considering Maya: A performance dialogue, not only gave me my first solo in my 15-year dance career at the time, but also showed me how I can use my art to give back to the community around me in a meaningful way. The show’s proceeds not only went to support battered women’s shelters in our community, but the dances and spoken word also highlighted female empowerment despite the challenges they face in society.” Economics teacher Cierra Young said.
The efforts of influential women, past and present, demonstrate how their impact can last for generations, encouraging their posterity to make a difference in their communities through courage and dedication.
“My grandma was a very kind person and always helped me with problems that were hard, so honoring her inspired me to help others too,” freshman Kaiden Jenkins said.
Honoring these accomplishments helps us, and women in the future, recognize that it is possible to create change as women. It motivates women and girls to persevere and strive for greater equality, safer conditions, and higher pay. While there are still many problems to fix, important women figures shine as a ray of hope that we can shape a better world for the next generation.
“Important women figures allow us to follow their footsteps and create lasting change,” Woodson said.
Women’s History Month honors the women who dedicated their lives to progress, opening new doors for future generations to continue their legacy. It motivates and inspires young women to recognize their ancestors’ accomplishments and be recognized in society.
