The Florida High baseball team is off to a hot start this season. Opening the year with six consecutive wins has quickly established them as one of the most talked-about teams in the 850. Coming off of last year’s record of 8-18, Florida High baseball has a bright future ahead of it this season.
Several players said last year’s team struggled with leadership and a strong will to win, two areas that have improved significantly this season. Leadership is a key part of baseball, as teams rely on players to set the tone and guide others both on and off the field.
“Last year, we just didn’t have any guys step up as a leader, and the team morale was a lot lower than it is this year,” senior Dylan McAllister said. “I feel like a lot of it was because we didn’t have many seniors who were stepping up to take their role last year. This year, we definitely have a lot of guys stepping up.”
Team morale also plays a major role in success on the field, as players feed off each other’s energy and support.
“This year, we have a lot more guys who are willing to bring up their teammates when they’re down and cheer them on when they’re up to bat,” senior Brayden Chason said.
Baseball is often described as a mental game. While physical skill is essential, staying focused and confident can make the difference between winning and losing. Having teammates who want you to succeed and do well helps players move on from past mistakes, whether it was an error in the field or a missed opportunity at the plate.
A strong team foundation is also built through effective coaching.
“Coach [Josh] Blount has also stepped up a lot this year as a second-year head coach,” McAllister said. “Our practices have been a lot more efficient and helped us with real, in-game situations like coverages and situational IO [in and out].”
Overall, a team’s morale, drive, brotherhood, and coaching are vital to a season’s success. That heartbeat is exactly what is carrying Florida High baseball to the top. Even through the losses, where last year’s team might have given up, this year’s team pushes through and keeps fighting until the game is over.
