Many students struggle to keep up with both school and working a part-time job. While it can be difficult to balance your workload and prevent it from piling up, having a part-time job in school allows you to pick up long-term benefits in education and future careers.
For students who are simultaneously employed and enrolled in school, it is important for them to prepare ahead of time when balancing both priorities.
“If I don’t do my schoolwork during the week, then I would have to do it on the weekends, which is when I have work, so it’s hard to keep up,” sophomore Jazmyn Gibson said.
When schoolwork piles up, it can be hard to know what to do or where to start. Students might have to take time off from their jobs to catch up on homework. However, over time, students may find a suitable schedule and strategy that works for them.

“Going with an open mind and just making sure you’re on top of things [can be helpful]. I mark important dates on a calendar, and it helps me not fall behind in school,” freshman Kaiden Jenkins said.
Although balancing the two may come with challenges, the benefits that come with having a job and gaining an education can heavily contribute to success. It can develop habits such as better time management and social skills.
“My job has allowed me to become more responsible and get better at presenting myself efficiently for future careers,” senior Charlotte Keefe said.
Preparing for a career is crucial for long-term success, which is why some students find the experience and skills important to acquire early on.
“My job absolutely helps with preparing me for my future career,” Keefe said. “It allows me to add to my resume to show that I’m the right person for the job.”
Although having a job while still in school may be difficult at times, the opportunities it affords students can be beneficial for the present and the future.
