Standardized exams are a staple of high school education. The most common are the ACT and SAT, and the process of preparing for and taking these tests can be stressful.
“The balance of studying for the SAT really wasn’t balanced because I didn’t have time due to homework and sports, but I did my best on what I could,” junior Lauren Rivers said.
Studying can be especially challenging when students must juggle demanding schedules that include coursework, extracurricular activities and athletics. Finding time to prepare for high-stakes exams often requires sacrifices, and many students struggle to maintain a consistent study routine while keeping up with their other responsibilities. Even students who have already taken the ACT multiple times often feel pressure to continue testing in hopes of improving their scores.
“I’ve taken the ACT three times so far, and I have another one in April,” senior Harley Derrickson said.
For some students, standardized testing is a repeated process aimed at achieving a higher score, while for others it is an entirely new experience. First-time test-takers often enter the process with uncertainty, learning what to expect as they go and adjusting their preparation strategies along the way.
The length and pacing of these exams can also vary depending on the student, adding another layer to the testing experience. While some students find themselves working quickly and finishing sections early, others may use the full allotted time, highlighting the differences in test-taking strategies and comfort levels.
“I had an average of about 10 minutes to spare on each section,” Rivers said. While Derrickson said it took her about three hours to finish the test.
Colleges often use these scores to evaluate applicants. Although the tests can be stressful, the outcome is a key factor. Some students feel confident about their performance, while others are unsure.
“I think I did pretty well,” Rivers said.
Studying is an important part of preparation for both the ACT and SAT. If students do not earn their desired score, they may retake the test. While these exams can help students in the future, success often requires careful planning and consistent studying.
