This year, the Florida High dance team was added to the variety of sports on campus. This makes Florida High a more diverse school and helps draw attention to our various programs.
“I think it makes us well-versed [in a variety of activities],” Dean of Discipline Julius Harley said.
Many students say they were looking forward to the addition of a dance team to Florida High’s extracurricular options.
“At first I was a little confused because I didn’t know [what it entailed], but after joining and trying out, it is actually one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” sophomore dance team member Chloe Lowe said.
Algebra teacher Shayla Jones and dance coach Wendy Crawford play an important role in the dance team. When the idea of a dance team was proposed to Crawford, she decided to take it on, and Jones sponsored the team, allowing it to be an option at Florida High.
“My friend’s mom [Wendy Crawford] decided that since she owns a dance studio, she would be able to start it up,” freshman Desi Hall said.
The dance team is guaranteed to always have a unique style with every routine due to having different choreographers for each one. With special guests coming in and the help of Crawford, the routines take around one week to learn as a team.
“We got some golden girls from the FSU dance team, and then we had a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader,[who was] an alum from the team,” Lowe said.
So far, the dance team has proven to be a great addition to Florida High, improving variety and giving students an opportunity to do what they love.
