While most eyes were on top runners at the Cecil Field Summer Classic, sophomore Lawson Phillips was quietly making a name for himself. Finishing 60th among 400 elite boys, Phillips delivered a performance that could signal the beginning of a breakout season.

     The Cecil Field Summer Classic 2026 was the 10th annual high school and middle school cross country season opener held on Aug. 21 at the Cecil Field Golf Course in Jacksonville, Florida. Events included an open 5K, middle school 2500-meter, and High school 5K races. Lawson Phillips was the only boy from Florida High selected to run with the elite boys, finishing 60th out of 351 boys. Running 16:50.00, Lawson is an underclassman five-year runner, running against more experienced runners who have been running for large portions of their lives.

     Another meet Lawson excelled in was the Yellow Jacket XC Invitational 2026 in Thomasville, Georgia. Ranking 1 out of 107, Lawson ran a 17:15.80.  Lawson has a different type of work ethic, and he trains unlike any other underclassman, which shows in how he pushed through challenges.  

     “I have a really strong work ethic: show up every day, six days a week, just consistency. That’s the main goal. You know, the more consistent you are, the better chance you have at what you do, and it’s a matter of showing up every day and giving it all you got.” Phillips said. Each day, Phillips puts the work in, determined to set himself apart for everyone, including his competition.

     “We could run two laps for warm-up, and Lawson would run a mile; he always goes above and beyond what he is asked to,” eighth grader and fellow cross country athlete Blakey Newlin said. 

     He is an underrated underclassman athlete who has yet to receive recognition for his hard work and dedication.

     “I think that he is so good, but he still has more to come, and that when he grows up he will be amazing,” Newlin said. 

     For Phillips, this season is about more than times and places. It’s about proving that the runner who went unnoticed is ready to be seen. If the opening races are any indication, the rest of the season may be impossible to ignore.
